Justina Fox – Burn Boot Camp, Woodstock, GA

Before Burn, I was overweight and out of shape. I suffered from anxiety and depression. Hormonal issues caused my weight to fluctuate up and down through the years. Getting fit on my own wasn’t working. Basically, I was completely uncomfortable and unhappy with whom I was physically and emotionally. I feared walking into a room full of women and being the most overweight person. I feared that people would judge me and focus on what I could not do. I did not want people to look at me and think to themselves “how does someone let himself or herself get this over weight? ”

Since August 10th, I have lost 74 pounds, 14% body fat, 31 inches and five pant sizes and it’s to be continued! Through Burn Boot Camp I found a community full of women that inspire and encourage each other every single day. (Thanks 6:30AM crew!) I was so afraid of being judged by my weight and ability. I found the opposite, unconditional acceptance. I’m a boot camp junkie! Going to camp every morning gives me tons of energy. I have met the best trainer, Jodie McGuff, who motivates and challenges me every class I attend. I have gained strength, and improved my coordination and balance. I no longer suffer from depression and anxiety. I do not shop at Lane Bryant anymore!

I am inspiring my children to make healthier lifestyle choices in nutrition and fitness. If mom can, they can too! The Burn Boot Camp lifestyle of clean eating, exercise and regular focus meetings to stay accountable has allowed me to take my life back again. For that, I am truly grateful. The past seven months have been difficult as well as challenging, but I’m looking forward to finishing my weight loss and keeping it off forever!

Work For It https://burnbootcamp.com/work-for-it/ Tue, 07 Mar 2017 19:12:17 +0000 https://burnbootcamp.com/?p=15886 Here at Burn Boot Camp we pride ourselves on inspiring others, empowering women and changing lives. We work hard to let our clients know that change isn’t just external, but internal as well. When you take care of your physical health, your mental health immediately improves and leaves you feeling positive and ready to conquer the world. Jen Van Cise started off as a client at Burn Boot Camp in Naples, FL, and immediately fell in love. After choosing to transform her life, she then decided to become an owner of two Burn locations. Read her inspiring story, in her own words, below!

Jen Van Cise – Naples, FL

When I walked into Burn Boot Camp 11 months ago, I had finally become fed up with myself.  I was feeling persistently exhausted and embarrassed at the example of poor health I was setting for my young son. I had gained 85 lbs. in two years in yet another cycle of yo-yo dieting and weight gain. My most recent weight gain was driven by a series of convenient excuses to eat poorly and to ignore my health, ranging from constant business trips to all types of career and parenting stresses. A former college athlete and marathon runner, I battled this cycle for 16 years as my career took center stage, and I never allowed myself time to benefit from any form of exercise at all. I worried that I had become too out of shape to work out in a Boot Camp format. Photos and videos of other women who looked like me and participated in the program encouraged me, so I decided I could probably do it too.

I have lost 75 lbs. so far as well as 25 inches on my measurements and 16% body fat. I am stronger and have some muscle tone, and I fit into the same jeans now that I could wear before I started gaining weight, 85 lbs. ago, even though I’ve “only” lost 75 lbs. of the weight I had gained.  Some of that difference is the weight of my increased muscle mass. Within one camp, I became committed to this place. I show up before dawn 6 days a week because I love it.  I’ve gained a new outlook about defining success, which is less about numbers and more about the great sense of accomplishment that I feel when achieving new fitness goals. I have run several 5K’s, improving my one mile run pace by about 3 minutes, and I have made progress towards many other goals that I continue to challenge myself to achieve.  I’ve also worked back up to 250 double-unders in a row and 13 triple-unders in a row with the jump rope, bringing me back in time to my school years when I competed and performed internationally on a jump rope team.  At least in some ways, I feel half my age again! I expected to get more fit when I walked through those doors, and I was prepared to put in the effort both in terms of fitness and nutrition. But there was more to the Burn Boot Camp experience than I had imagined. Over the years, I had barely noticed myself becoming rather private and introverted through eight job relocations and a myopic focus on career and family.

Now, suddenly, I was welcomed by a whole community of like-minded women of all ages, shapes, and sizes, all of whom encouraged me to succeed as they pursued their own fitness goals by my side. I didn’t realize how much I needed the friendship and support of the women I now proudly call my friends. Those relationships are incredibly important to me now, and I feel like I’m where I “belong” for the first time since I was on sports teams as a girl. I’d like to thank Holly Strickland and Ryan and Jen Day for their leadership, support, and talent as the owners and trainers of our Naples Burn Boot Camp. They are truly top quality, and they have now also trained a group of talented support trainers in their image. They are coaches, role models, and now friends as well. I’ve become an advocate for Burn Boot Camp wherever I go, and, as I take on the ownership of two new Burn Boot Camp locations in Florida myself, I’m delighted to be bringing the Burn Boot Camp experience to two more communities of women!

Stephanie Derousseau – North West Raleigh, NC

I have always been on the chubby side. I can distinctly remember instances in my life when it was pointed out to me and I felt effected by it. Before Burn, playing with my kids was me sitting in a chair as they played in the yard. I was not active. And I absolutely did not take photos of myself. It was hard to find one even for this. A friend of mine suggested we check out this Burn Boot Camp place. She kept bailing on me every time we decided to go. Finally one Saturday, I got up and went on my own. I always thought that my exercise routine of using my elliptical machine for an hour a day was cutting it. Boy was I wrong.

I could not walk for three days after my first workout with Scott. I enjoyed it. So I went back on Wednesday. I thought I was being slick going at 5am because it was only 30 minutes. I had to mod down on the majority of the exercises. Having been athletic as a younger me, I never realized how actually out of shape I truly was. “You can do anything for 20 seconds.” That is what stuck in my mind. 20 seconds. I can do this. But then 20 seconds became 40 and then a minute. Then out of the blue, results started coming. I am seeing muscles in places I had no idea I would ever be able to tone. My stomach started to flatten out. I have what might possibly become an actual ab muscle. Not bad for a girl that could not hold herself up in a plank, or hold herself up on the equalizer bars, or do any resemblance of a push up, or even run 20 yards without being winded. It has been 10 months and I am in the best shape of my life. I weigh less than I did as a freshman in high school, I am definitely smaller, and I feel amazing. I have new friends that are amazingly supportive and willing to make me push myself to limits that I never knew my body could hit.

This community of people is REAL. I am eating better than I ever have before. I am more aware of over indulging. I am aware of what is going into my body. My mental state has become clearer. I see myself as a completely different person. I actually choose to run around after my children. I am in a better place after I leave. It is truly the only time in my day that it is strictly about me. I can care about me without distraction or worry. Mostly my worry during class is to not vomit or pass out, but I am actually having fun. My goals are similar to everyone at Burn. Get to the next level of this exercise. What can I do to make this better for me? Can I catch that person? I might not get there, but I am going to try. She is trying that, can I do that one day? And as long as I leave knowing I gave 100%, I feel amazing. The absolute best part of this experience has been seeing people reach their goals. It is a group of women cheering because someone did something they could not do before no matter how simple it may seem. Someone stepped it up one notch. Someone accomplished something that they never thought possible. When they accomplish it, you feel like you have too, because we have become invested in each other’s success. How is that not motivating to keep going back?

Lindy Mathis – Burn Boot Camp – Rochester, MN

Before I started working out at Burn, I was constantly exhausted and struggled with back and neck pain with arthritis from past injuries. Some days I felt twice my age. Same as a lot of my Burn ladies, I am always on the go with two kiddo’s (ages 6 and 10) activities, working full time, and trying to find time for our family. I spend all day taking care of other people at work and home, and this left little time for me to take care of me. I hadn’t worked out in or out of a gym in over 8 years. Last year, my father was diagnosed with terminal cancer, and it flipped my world upside down. Trying to manage life with this new stressor consumed me. It was time to make a change, and do something to take care of myself, to challenge myself, and to give me a focus. I continued seeing ads on Facebook for Burn opening a new location here in Rochester for free. I was skeptical because nothing is ever free!! A few friends and I decided to try it out together.

Six months later I am down 20 lbs., 12 inches, and over 7% body fat. I feel strong, healthy, energetic, and I have confidence back. This journey has been challenging, but it has changed my life, given me an opportunity to take care of myself, to have an outlet for those difficult days, and to challenge myself to be the best version of me. I have formed new friendships, support, and a family at Burn, and learned that I NEED to take time for me. Through my focus meetings, I learned how to balance my macros, ways to eat cleaner, and that “you can’t out train your diet”. I went all in, and haven’t looked back. The support, encouragement, and energy I have received from our Head Trainer, Leyton Bohr, has genuinely changed my life. He is truly one in a million.

Angie Larson – Burn Boot Camp – Rochester, MN

“Before starting Burn Boot Camp, I knew I needed to start working out but I lacked the motivation. I had just bought a new rowing machine in hopes of getting fit, but it sat unused. I felt tired and worn out most of the time. I saw the Facebook post about Burn Boot Camp’s 30 day free trial. I signed up with no expectations. In the back of my mind I assumed I would go intermittently for a month and call it quits, as this had been my experience in the past when I started gym memberships. I went on the first day, then the second. I have been going 4-6 days a week for the past 5 months. Physically, I have lost 18 lbs, 6.6% body fat and 9 inches. I am amazed and thrilled with the changes I have seen! I have more energy, I am more patient with my 3 and 5 year old and I feel more focused and productive at work. I am so thankful for Burn!”

Read how Megan chose to transform her life, drop over 55 pounds and become happier and healthier than ever before.

Megan Little – Burn Boot Camp – Woodstock, GA

“My name is Megan and I am a 44 year old single mom of a 12 year old son and 14 year old daughter. Before I started BBC my weight was out of control. I have been able to lose weight, but keeping it off was a different story. Between the unhealthy foods and the massive amounts of diet sodas, I was always worn out by the end of the day. I had no energy! I felt horrible about myself, and never wanted to be in pictures. If I was, I hid behind a kid. After a tough year for my family, I finally had enough. 7 months ago I told all my coworkers that I had to take back my life and I was going to join a gym and get ALL of this weight off of me again. The next week I saw an ad for this place opening that offered free boot camp for 30 days. I signed up immediately. I was petrified that I wasn’t going to be able to do it, but I was even more petrified of what would happen if I didn’t. I owed it to myself and my kids to be the healthiest version of me, possible. I walked in the first day the gym opened and never looked back. I knew I would be sore, but I had no idea how out of shape I truly was. Still, I crawled out of the house everyday and showed up! After a few weeks, the sore muscles started to go away. My daughter told me that pain was “weakness leaving my body”, and she was right. Within a few weeks, I started to feel stronger, both physically and mentally. I’ve been “thin” before but I have never been this strong. Even though I haven’t reached my goal, I’ve lost almost 60 pounds, over 10% body fat and countless more inches. I am happy, healthy, strong, and my energy is higher than it’s ever been. I KNOW that the self-confidence I have gained will carry me through this fitness journey and help me maintain the healthy lifestyle I learned from BBC. I have never felt that I was alone in the journey, and for that I am grateful.”

When you take care of your physical health, your mental health immediately improves and leaves you feeling positive and ready to conquer the world. Read about how Sara Sherry changed her body, her mindset and her life through joining Burn…

Sara Sherry – Burn Boot Camp – Ashburn, VA

My name is Sara Jane Sherry and I attend the Ashburn, VA, Burn Boot Camp. Before joining Burn, I felt stuck. I had been living an active lifestyle and exercised regularly, but I struggled with seeing results.  I was not feeling comfortable in my own skin (or clothes) and was beginning to think I needed a change. Like anything new, I was a little nervous before starting Burn. I joined our Ashburn, VA location during their Grand Opening. I felt comfortable with the boot camp format, as I had been doing that for a number of years.  What I didn’t realize when I joined Burn was that I was capable of so much more than I knew. To date, I have lost 16 pounds, 5% body fat and 4.5 inches. I have begun to notice some increased muscle tone in my arms, quads and back. I have always been my own worst critic, often turning towards belittling even when I’ve done something well. I compare myself to others and become frustrated when I can’t perform at a higher level.  However, I’m slowly beginning to celebrate small victories when they happen- to allow myself to feel strong when I hold that 5-minute plank or beat the clock on timed sprints.

I’m also learning to be more patient and to “trust the process.” I view where I am now, as just a stepping-stone to where I hope to be in the future.  I am pleased with my weight loss and the changes in my body composition I have made to date.  Looking towards the future, I don’t have a number on the scale in mind.  Would I like to look more cut? Yes. Would I love to gain more lean muscle?  Absolutely. But my goal is simple- I want to be the best version of myself. I want to live a healthy lifestyle FOR GOOD- allowing myself to enjoy life along the way. Right now I am feeling uplifted, that finally, my hard work in and out of the gym is changing my body in ways I had only dreamed before I joined Burn.  I am also hopeful of what I can accomplish as I continue to improve my performance at camp.  Burn has directed me towards a dietary lifestyle of macro counting. I spend Sunday’s meal prepping which keeps me accountable during the busy weekdays.  I am so grateful I have found a gym family who provide me with support and encouragement. The amazing women I have met at Burn are a huge source of motivation for me.  Our head trainer, Chris, and gym owner, Lindsey, have been nothing but positive from the start.  They have been instrumental in helping me see results and assured me to stay the course when I’ve been frustrated or discouraged.  I am so pleased to be on this journey with Burn and can’t wait to see where it takes me.

Emily McMillan – Burn Boot Camp – Cornelius, NC

“After a few years of giving every excuse under the sun as to why I couldn’t work out anymore, I had reached a point where I no longer liked how I felt about myself. I knew I needed to change something, but wasn’t really sure how to do it. As a coach of young girls for the Carolina Rapids Soccer Club, I knew I needed to get fit and healthy to be a good role model, but years of stress and being constantly on the go had led to bad eating habits and excuses for not exercising, and I was lost as to how to get started. A friend who worked out at Burn offered me a 3 month membership she had won at an auction as a gift to help me get going, and despite my protests she didn’t give in until I said yes. Best decision of my life!

At first I was worried that I was so far gone that I would be embarrassed by how little I could do. As a former athlete, I didn’t want to have people surprised by how weak I was. What I found at Burn was the complete opposite of what I anticipated. There were so many women of different sizes and walks of life, and everyone there supported and encouraged each other. In a world where you constantly feel judged, Burn is a place where no one compares you to anyone. The trainers are incredible at pushing you and encouraging you to do more than you ever thought possible. I love how uplifting everyone is! I was encouraged to come five days a week to start, which seemed impossible, but now I can’t miss Burn. It has quickly become my favorite part of my day! I’ve lost over 40 pounds, 7% body fat, and 7 inches in my waist in 8 months. The best part though is how I feel! I have more energy, which has made me a better coach for my girls. I also love that when I talk to the soccer girls about my journey, I don’t discuss it in terms of weight loss, but in how strong I’ve become. They love to hear how many pushups or burpees I did that morning when they get to training. When I accomplish something for the first time, like my unassisted pull-up, I’m showing them that if you work hard and believe in yourself anything is possible!”
