Within that purpose is where you will find the meaning of life. In our pursuit of this discovery, we will come across decisions. Who do I want to be? How far do I want to take it? How big am I willing to dream? The answer to these questions determines the responsibility that I have to take on to fulfill my calling. Then the question is, “well, how do I take responsibility?” The answer is that you map it out, put it on your schedule, and get sh*t done. This is why I believe that goal setting is one of the core fundamentals of achievement in business. One of the most important things you can do in life is to achieve success and surpass your parent’s way of life. A great way to get there is by simply setting goals. At the start line, goals require a vision and responsibility, and over time, they produce meaning, purpose, and passion.

There are a couple of guiding principles rules that I use when it comes to goal setting for myself:

  1. Aim high. Far too many people set their goals too low. When you don’t set the bar high enough, you’re saying to yourself, “I don’t really believe I’ve got what it takes.” You must have the confidence that you can reach the finish line, or you’ve lost before you’ve even started. Stand tall and reach as high as you can. Listen to your intuition. You don’t need data; you need an intuitive vision for a happy, healthy, and prosperous life. You’re an achiever, so you will hit your goals but don’t set them too low, or you’re selling yourself, your family, and your community short. Share your goals out loud and never be ashamed to set crazy goals that others don’t think are realistic. If you’re not expressing the full power of your imagination, then you’re not living a full life. As humans, our need to create is as important as the oxygen we breathe. If we don’t have it, we begin to die inside. Never let anyone strip you of that freedom by giving too much of your power away to their judgment. Whatever your purpose is I want you to chase it without shame or fear realizing that the more people who call you crazy indicates the strength of your ideas. I believe that you’re capable far beyond even your own imagination. Look beyond your current grasp, and you will find a whole new world of possibilities. The most interesting thing I’ve noticed is that when you begin to believe in possibilities, your purpose somehow finds you.
  1. Goal setting needs to be very specific. Most people go wrong in goal setting because of the obscurity of their language. It’s too vague. For example, “I want to grow my company” or “I want to get in shape” are not specific goals. “My goal is to take my company from 0 to 100 million” is a little more specific but still not detailed enough. “My goal is to see my company go from 0 to 100 million, employ 70 people in one year, hire people based on our core values, and be an organization that has a good harmony between profit and values.” Now I’m getting specific and granular with the language around my goals, making it more likely they come to fruition because I know the road ahead. Anticipation is powerful. You select the destination and figure out exactly how to get there. I stood at a podium and told our Burn Boot Camp Franchise Partners and the hundreds of others that we are “going to the moon,” which represents our global presence, and the last place to do business will be on the moon! This visionary statement is hollow if it’s not backed up with a specific action plan.

My team and I plan for one and three years ahead in an annual planning meeting in December. We carve out the road map for the next three years from this meeting by pulling together annual KPI goals, quarterly rocks, projects, and initiatives. My Leadership Team works with each team member to set specific initiatives that roll up to our overall objectives for the quarter. These projects are then driven by a project management process that manages, evaluates, and oversees all projects being executed and completed on time. Each week I have a two-hour Leadership Meeting in which we measure our KPI’s from the last week, track progress on projects and key dates, and most importantly, identify, discuss and solve the organization’s most significant issues and opportunities. It goes much deeper than this, but I want you to understand the importance of how intentional you have to be to build a company. Business is one of the toughest arenas in the world to play in so you should always be able to articulate your visions and your road map to get there with specific, detail-oriented language anchored by key dates and deadlines.

  1. Failure. To take the first two steps and do them really well, you have to be willing to fail. Failure is your friend. People have a negative connotation about it, but it’s not something to be afraid of. I’m a fitness guy, and failure for me during a workout means growth. Failure = growth. When you fail at Burn Boot Camp on arm day, it’s just a short-term muscle breakdown, but it means success in the long term. Muhammad Ali once said, “don’t quit, suffer now, and be a champion for the rest of your life.” The principles we teach within the four walls of Burn Boot Camp transcend the gym and give you real-life levers you can pull. This is a byproduct of coming together as a community, celebrating fitness, and crushing our workouts.

We can fall in love with failure at the gym level because it changes our bodies, confidence, and outlook on life. It changes our self-esteem. I have failed so many times with Burn Boot Camp. In the eight figures plus. That’s okay; it’s necessary. It makes us better. My focus is on the values that drive us through the times when we fail. Being a values-based company, caring about our people more than our profit, and having harmony in both is my vision and goal for the Burn Boot Camp organization, and that’s why I am willing to fail. If I don’t push us to do things that we aren’t sure will work, then our company will never do anything interesting. Without innovation and excitement for our company, people will become disengaged over time. I personally believe it’s my moral obligation and fiduciary responsibility as the leader of an organization to take risks and fail.

A Cause Worth Rallying Behind https://burnbootcamp.com/a-cause-worth-rallying-behind/ Thu, 09 Dec 2021 14:15:10 +0000 https://burnbootcamp.com/?p=2784435 Burn Boot Camp recently teamed up with the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) for their annual national ‘Be Their Muscle’ philanthropic event to raise $504,756 for the MDA. The ‘Be Their Muscle’ campaign supports MDA’s mission to empower the lives of kids and adults living with muscular dystrophy, ALS and over 43 neuromuscular diseases to fund research, care, and advocacy so families can live longer and grow stronger.

This year, more than 295 individual gyms across Burn Nation were represented in our second-highest fundraising effort since we began our partnership with the MDA over 5 years ago. A big thank you to our incredible members, Franchise Partners and their teams for showing up in a big way to support the MDA.

Burn Boot Camp Founder and COO, Morgan Kline, recently shared her thoughts on the importance of community impact and a commitment to a charitable partnership with Global Franchise. In the article she states, “Over the past few years, we at Burn Boot Camp have seen how working with the MDA has connected us to our community and strengthened our bond with our team members and members.”

A Cause Worth Rallying Behind – Why Your Business Should Prioritize Charitable Efforts

By Morgan Kline (This story was originally published by Global Franchise)

Most people have an inherent desire to connect with others and be a part of something larger than themselves. Between work, family, and other commitments, our sense of purpose can weaken, or even feel lost, as we try to keep up in our fast-moving world.

This is leading to a record number of people looking to merge the two worlds – they’re leaving their jobs in search of a career that will allow them to make meaningful connections to satisfy that desire and find purpose in their work. Now is the time for businesses across all industries to step up and demonstrate a social conscience.

Since its inception, community impact has been a crucial component of Burn Boot Camp’s DNA and a top priority across the system. This is why we have an ongoing partnership with the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). The annual philanthropic ‘Be Their Muscle’ event supports MDA’s mission to empower the lives of kids and adults living with muscular dystrophy, ALS, and over 43 neuromuscular diseases to fund research, care, and advocacy so families can live longer and grow stronger. In correlation with the event, Burn Boot Camp locations across the country host a workout on a specific day, with 100% of the proceeds directly benefitting MDA to send hundreds of children living with muscular dystrophy to a life-changing summer camp.

Over the past few years, we at Burn Boot Camp have seen how working with the MDA has connected us to our community and strengthened our bond with our team members and members. The below insight and advice are meant to help franchisors understand the value and importance of prioritizing charitable efforts and the benefits it will have on the business.

Having a Charitable Partner Brings Your Company Mission to Life

There are many franchisors that include messaging in their mission statement about how they want to have an impact on their community or be a part of the bigger picture. But the question is, what are they doing to act on that mission statement?

The mission of Burn Boot Camp is to empower individuals to build confidence and happiness that will transcend fitness into a community of mentally, emotionally, and physically strong people. We wanted to pick a cause that worked well with what we believe in doing every day. Both Burn and the MDA believe in building strength through unity, which allowed us to align and come together on our goals and missions.

Having a charitable partner should be seen as an investment a business is making in their community, employees, and brand. It helps increase public awareness of your initiative and dedication to the cause by demonstrating that tangible steps are being taken to follow through on your promises. Not to mention, it will help educate and drive awareness towards the cause and charity – a win-win.

Strengthen Community Morale and Involvement

At Burn Boot Camp, our community is dedicated to educating, influencing, and inspiring every life with knowledge, love, strength, and passion. So, we knew our members would share our passion for MDA and building awareness on their efforts.

To further build on existing community relationships, or to create ones, connect with local businesses to see if there is interest in joining the cause. Maybe it’s as simple as putting up a flyer for a charity event at the local coffee shop or an effort that’s a little more involved, such as asking a local vendor to participate alongside you or make a donation. Relationships built on strong grounds with the common interest of something like supporting a charity can prove to be useful down the road.

When one employee or organization in a community dedicates themselves wholeheartedly to a cause, it has the potential to spread like wildfire and bring in others who are interested in contributing to the cause as well.

Organizations are expected to do more than provide quality goods and services to customers and a paycheck to employees. Consumers and employees are looking for businesses to go the extra mile and support local, or national, causes in their community. A study done by Cone Communications found that 90% of the customers surveyed said they would support a company that championed a cause they care about. Supporting a charity or specific cause can also go as far as helping attract and retain members and talent.

Things to Consider When Selecting a Charitable Partner

Select a charitable cause or partner that instills a common thread of passion and excitement across the business. To ensure that you are aligning with your employees, include them in the process. Ask them to submit or share their ideas, interests and passions, and include them in the planning process so they feel represented.

Once you’ve received input from others in your organization, make sure you are selecting a cause that you know your brand can support. Compile a list of potential initiatives that could be conducted systemwide such as in-person events or week-long supply drives, or whatever it may be. Also ask yourself if the business has the appropriate means and resources required to see the effort through. When you enter into a philanthropic partnership, you want to make sure you have a clear idea and vision on the execution.

Philanthropy has the power to have a profound impact on your franchise system. It will rally together your franchisees, home office team members, and community while providing the best platform to engage with your current and potential members. Franchise brands that prioritize philanthropy will reap the benefits of a strengthened system of partners that will have a direct impact on bottom-line results.

Ignite Your Fire: It’s As Simple As 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 https://burnbootcamp.com/ignite-fire-simple-1-2-3-4-5/ Thu, 01 Feb 2018 20:57:48 +0000 https://burnbootcamp.com/?p=17681

Devan Kline

Here are 5 things to help you RAISE YOUR BAR this week! Take a moment to look at your favorite topic or binge on all of them!

1. How Much Water Am I Supposed To Drink?

Hydration is the key to your health. By listening to my recommendations in this video you’ll potentially speed up your metabolism by 30%. Water is sometimes an afterthought when we get busy and I implore you to take it seriously, it will do a lot of good with just a little effort!

2. Mastering the Illusive Pull Up!

Those pesky pull-ups! The pull-up goal is the most contradictive performance goal out there. I often hear “I hate doing them, but I really want to master 5 in a row” or “I just want to do one but I don’t know where to start.” If you’re like me, you just plain love doing them because they HURT SO GOOD! These two tips will help you get your very first unbroken pull-up or pull you through that plateau you’ve been experiencing.

3. Give Me Stronger Shoulders!

The shoulder muscle is what really makes your upper body look “well built.” Since the Glenohumeral joint is responsible for connecting the pectoral complex, much of the back complex, triceps, biceps, and deltoids. You want these muscles to be strong for postural purposes, too! I show a “triple set” that can be done with a set of dumbbells and a jump rope! Get ready to sweat!

4. Morgan’s Number One Tip For Busy Moms!

Morgan and I just had a baby boy 4 weeks ago, Maxwell Michael Kline! Amongst all of the craziness in the Kline household Morgan found some time to give her #1 tip to busy moms who are struggling to put themselves first. This 30-second video can catapult your health.

5. One Supplement To Take Care Of Your Knees

I’ve had two knee surgeries and actually am missing my lateral meniscus in my left knee. When I was playing ball with the San Francisco Giants I had to learn to take care of my knee to stay on the field. Great nutrition and supplementation is key as they are building blocks to repair your bodily damage. If you put crap in, you’ll get crap out! This short video talks about what I use 5 years later to remain 100% active with no complications from my surgeries!

I wanted to leave with you one thing I live by. Knowledge is not power. Knowledge is only potential power. Knowledge with massive action toward your goals is success. Basically, I love providing you with tools and strategies to better your life but they only work if you use them immediately!

Keep Moving,

Devan Kline

My “Get Back on Track” Formula https://burnbootcamp.com/get-back-track-formula/ Tue, 05 Dec 2017 20:44:09 +0000 https://burnbootcamp.com/?p=17060

By Devan Kline

Alright, I’ll come clean: As hard as I try to stick to my diet and exercise routine, sometimes I fail. Many people think that because I’m a personal trainer I have a perfect diet and never miss a workout. Actually, that assumption couldn’t be further from the truth!

As a husband, father, trainer, speaker, and business owner I have the craziest schedule. One night I could be in Dallas, Texas with expert trainer Mike Harper rocking his orientation, and the next day flying to New York City for a segment on Fox and Friends.

Sometimes my schedule gets the best of me and I fall off track. Over the last few weeks my workouts have reduced by 50% in frequency, and when I do work out I haven’t been as focused. I never “blow it out” with my nutrition, but it has been consistently off track.

But I’m not ashamed to tell you any of this. I know many of you go through the same struggles that I do—trust me when I say you’re not alone.

There will always be times when we fall off track from our goals and progress. Keep your psychology strong by realizing that you’re only a failure if you stop trying. You don’t have to be perfect or flawless, you just have to commit to the endless pursuit of your goals.

For those times when you’re feeling off, use the following four tips in my “Get Back on Track” formula!

1. Set a goal with a timeline. Solidify your goals by committing to a schedule. For example, I had to re-motivate myself earlier this year by scheduling our Burn Athlete photo shoot. If it’s time for you to take your fitness to the next level, then put it on the schedule. You’ll feel more committed to meeting every goal.

2. Be more grateful. When things get overwhelming, sometimes all we need to do is to open our eyes and fix our focus! Take time to step back and appreciate the good in your life. You are blessed in so many ways. Maybe your body isn’t where you’d like it to be, maybe you’re highly stressed at work, or maybe your eating habits aren’t consistent. But take some time to recognize the progress that you’ve made. Trade your expectations for appreciation and you’ll change your state of mind instantly.

3. Drink meal replacement smoothies. While meal prepping is hugely beneficial to building healthy eating habits, sometimes you get sick and tired of cooking and eating the same things, right? Here are 25 all-natural protein smoothie recipes that will help you to switch up your routine while still getting your protein in.

4. Modify your inputs. What are you doing between the hours of 5 pm and 10 pm? I find that this is when success happens. Many people are tuned into their phones and TVs in the evenings watching other people’s lives from afar. I live by the “No Extra Time Rule,” or the NET Rule. By filling up all the time that I’m awake with good inputs like healthy food, effective workouts, self-improvement newsletters, books, and working on my passion I have no extra time for bad inputs. Refusing to allow bad inputs like reality TV or endless Facebook feed scrolling can change your life. You must stand guard at your brain every single day and control your inputs!

I hope my tips will be helpful for you the next time you feel like you’ve fallen off track. When you start with Burn Boot Camp or any other fitness program, you will eventually lose that initial motivation. That’s only natural.

That’s okay, though, because if you’re truly passionate and dedicated to achieving your goals, that motivation will come back like clockwork!

The Magic of Momentum https://burnbootcamp.com/magic-of-momentum-2/ Wed, 13 Sep 2017 15:37:12 +0000 https://burnbootcamp.com/?p=15158 [vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Are you ready to start the week off with paramount momentum!? Our latest video, The Magic of Momentum, is exactly what you need to face these next few days with confidence and drive.

Everyone enjoys setting goals. When you need to readjust your life and get back on the right track, goals are necessary. Sometimes you need a little extra something to push yourself and ignite the motivation to better your life. Unfortunately, it’s easy to flip your perspective and look at your goals as something unrealistic and unattainable. Your ambitions may seem exciting at the beginning, but once you try to achieve them they can feel overwhelming and can lead you to become easily discouraged. Today we’re going to help you break down your goals into bite size pieces so that you can gain momentum and get to the end point that you desire.

When setting a goal, it’s important to remember to be realistic. Don’t set your dreams too high, or you’ll most likely let yourself down in the end. Take massive action day by day. Little steps will generate big results and results generate excitement. Change your life by following our success system and surrounding yourself with people who are packed with positivity.

If you’re motivated to get your fitness routine on the right track, make sure to also take care of your nutrition! Sign up below to get an inside look at our Burn Nutrition guides and videos.

Unanswered Questions https://burnbootcamp.com/unanswered-questions/ Mon, 21 Aug 2017 14:37:37 +0000 https://burnbootcamp.com/?p=17068

Lately, I have been diving deep into a lot of in depth reading material! From the 1,000+ question exam I will pass to earn my CNC, to every business audiobook I can find…  much of my free time has been spent trying improve my mental and physical capabilities. There is always room for improvement!

As I was running 6 miles last night listening to Tony Robbins – Business Mastery on YouTube – he revealed the single most comprehensive way to solve any problem in your life. This tip was such a huge motivator for me; so I decided to share it with you!

As Tony always says, you have to be in the right “state” of mind in every situation! Are you ready?

If you’re in a great mood and ready to think positive about the world, keep reading!

If today isn’t your best day, do something to change the physiological state of your body RIGHT NOW! The thoughts that run through your head continually influence your perspective and feelings towards life in general. Don’t let those thoughts get in the way of your successes! Don’t believe me? Try this tip…

Tip: If you need to dramatically change your mood in just minutes, ask yourself these three questions…

  • What are you REALLY grateful for?
  • What makes you extremely proud of yourself?
  • Who do you love unconditionally?
  • Think about these three things with laser focus and watch how quickly your mood can change from sleepy, unmotivated, lethargic… to happy and excited for your day to day life!

The key to solving any problem is realizing that problems don’t really exist. I know that sounds crazy! The term “problem” really means you simply don’t have an answer to something.

Think about it, all problems are really just unanswered questions. The key to intelligent problem solving is figuring out what questions you need to ask yourself and how those questions are going to lead to positive results.

Follow me?

Tony created a system that I’ve have used with my “problems” as well as my clients “problems”. It has helped me change my perspective on life and has always aided me in facing various obstacles that I stress about day to day or long term.

There is a CURE to changing your life and making it stress free. When you ask yourself the right questions, you’ll change your perspective on life. I know this may seem kinda deep, but Tony provided an easy system for us to start implementing this method as soon as possible.

So whether you struggle with nutrition, work, home life, kids, or anything else life throws your way, realize that every situation is a blessing. Your problem gives you an opportunity to find answers, certainty, and truth if you ask the right questions. Problems aren’t burdens that you carry; they are a necessary part of life that shape who you are!

Robbin’s Problem Solving Method

It’s important to know that 5% of your time should be spent asking the question, or problem (How can I lose weight? What do I need to change to see results? Etc) and 95% of your time should be spent answering the question to the problem (AKA: Figuring out the solution).

So whatever problem you’re facing in life, ask the following questions to yourself. Take the time to step away with pen and paper. For each of the following questions, provide four thorough answers. It is key to trust this process and enjoy working through each problem, knowing you’re going to eventually end up with the answer you’re looking for.

What makes this great?

You’ll probably say, “Nothing is great about this”… but you have to give yourself four valid reasons why this problem you’re facing is great. It could be that you learned something or discovered a new opportunity. Think of all of the ways that you are blessed and how this problem is not going to rid you of those blessings!

What’s not perfect yet?

Don’t focus on what’s “wrong” – Focus on what isn’t you need to change about this situation to make it perfect.

What are you willing to do to solve it? What are you not willing to do?

Be honest! What are you willing to do? How are you willing to step up? What are you absolutely not willing to do anymore? How are you no longer willing to feel? Give four valid feelings or things you will absolutely start doing or stop doing right now.

How can you enjoy the process of solving your problem?

Now that you have a game plan, how can you truly enjoy the process? What are you going to do to make the most of this situation?

Isn’t that pretty easy? It is a simple tool to make yourself a better problem solver! By going through this exercise with any perceived problem you will be asking yourself the right questions to reveal a clear and consistent answer.

The best part is, when YOU write it or say it, it has to be true. If someone else tells you how to solve it, you can doubt them. There is no denying the truth when it comes from your own thoughts and words.

I hope you take a moment to write this down, and really use this in your life. Remember, you must be in the right state of mind or this won’t work as well. You have the power to change your life! Now get to work!

Keep Moving,
Devan Kline
