The Spotlight Is On Angie

Angie Parkhouse is a member at Burn Boot Camp Mallard Creek. She was diagnosed with breast cancer three years ago.

Angie’s family never had any breast cancer in their family, but her husband still urged her to get checked. Finally after five months, Angie’s husband made her the appointment.

She kept going in for mammograms until she had two needle biopsies in areas of concern. Her results came back irregular, but didn’t show any signs of cancer. The doctors still scheduled her for a lumpectomy.

Before her lumpectomy, Angie went in for another mammogram in order to make the area of operation. She was ordered to have another biopsy on the other side of her breast. Immediately, she knew she would need a mastectomy.

After the second biopsy, she got the call where the doctors told her that her results showed cancer. She finally chose to have a double mastectomy.

Her advice is to always be checked early and regularly. Self-checking can’t always catch breast cancer in time!

Physical Therapy helped her to regain mobility for her upper body. Additionally, she says that Burn Boot Camp has helped build strength back.

Fit Mom of the Month, July 2013 – Mila Cainey https://burnbootcamp.com/fit-mom-of-the-month-july-2013-mila-cainey/ Fri, 26 Jul 2013 19:24:21 +0000 https://devanklinefitness.com/?p=1195

Mila Lost 35 LBS and Changed Her Life!

Up until I had my first child, I had always been fit and active.  In fact, my roommates in college used to tease me about how much energy I had – they didn’t know where it all came from!  After the birth of my oldest daughter, I soon began to experience severe hormonal imbalances which would lead to crazy moodiness and out-of-control hunger.  The doctor had diagnosed me with insulin resistance and told me to watch my carb intake, or the insulin resistance could easily morph into diabetes.  He put me on 3 different medications to control my blood sugar, high blood pressure, and increased testosterone (yes, I did say TESTOSTERONE).  However, the stress of raising young children and full-time work led to overeating and a sedentary lifestyle.  By the age of 40, I was nearly 200 pounds and could no longer see the energetic and full-of-life person I had once been.  I was extremely lethargic and was clinically depressed.  I was an emotional and physical mess and needed to turn it around!
Shorty after my 40th birthday, a friend in the neighborhood told me about the 2-week free trial at Burn Boot Camp in Huntersville, and I thought, “This is the intervention I need!”.  The following Monday, I went to my first boot camp class and didn’t know if I’d make it through it; it was tough!  In fact, I was nauseous the first week or two and I was seriously starting to question my sanity.  Devan told me that feeling sick to your stomach was a common experience for people who hadn’t exercised that intensely for awhile, and to try to stick it out.  So I continued to come every morning at 5:15, and by 30 days I had lost about 10 pounds and I was hooked!

Attending BBC 5 or 6 days a week has had huge benefits for me – I’m nearly 35 pounds lighter and a whole lot more fit than I was when I walked into class the first time.  I can’t believe how fast I can run, how high I can jump, and how long I can hold a plank!  I’ve also made friendships with an incredible circle of women, all of whom have played a huge part in my motivation to come every day.  Devan and his staff are all very positive and encouraging – the whole experience has been so rewarding, that I would recommend it to anyone looking for a workout that will finally get those “mommy” pounds off!

For the first time in many years, I feel healthy and strong.  That’s a feeling you can’t put a price on!

Burn Boot Camp Fit Mom of the Month – May 2013 https://burnbootcamp.com/bbc-fit-mom-of-the-month-may-2013/ Wed, 05 Jun 2013 22:09:38 +0000 https://devanklinefitness.com/?p=1171 Ozzie Completely Transformed Her Body and Looks Ripped As Ever!

I have two beautiful girls, 5 and 3.5, and a wonderful husband. I work a full time job and taking care of my young kids doesn’t leave me much time myself. Having “guilt-stricken” working mom syndrome was one of my biggest excuses not to work-out and take care of myself.  I was putting my family before my own health, body and needs not noticing that I could be a better mom and wife creating a happier family life.
I found out about Burn Boot Camp through a newspaper article. I was very skeptical about joining the program. I really did not want to commit to something that I truly could not keep up, because I was very good at that 🙂 My “donations” to various gyms were very well-known.
A few days later, while looking at one of my daughters 4th birthday party pictures I found myself staring at one particular picture which just struck a nerve and made me feel unhappy about myself. That was an eye opener for me.  I knew I had to do something for myself and and decided to try the 14 Day Test Drive. It was very hard at the beginning, but Devan kept motivating me each workout. After 14 days I was addicted.
Overall I lost 28 LBS, 5% body fat. I feel great getting up and being at Bootcamp by 5:30am every morning (This is a big lie, I still hate waking up that early), but it is a great feeling to know that I do something about myself each morning and continue to feel great especially in front of the mirror and any picture I have taken since. I also developed some wonderful friendships through Bootcamp!
I am in better shape now than when I was playing college volleyball! Since I signed up for bootcamp, I ran many races, including my first half marathon, first Spartan and first Warrior Dash and now I am training for my first triathlon. Devan believes in me and pushes me to be a BETTER ME every day!

Last but not least, I would like to thank my husband for all of his support.  He has helped take over some of the role with the kids and he has been verbs supportive of my self-change program.  Without his support I think I would have reverted to my old ways but here I am – and here to stay.

Taking to The Next Level: Brandi and Michelle’s Phase 2 https://burnbootcamp.com/taking-to-the-next-level-brandi-and-michelles-phase-2/ Thu, 28 Mar 2013 05:01:33 +0000 https://devanklinefitness.com/?p=1159 It is no secret that what Brandi Parker and Michelle Sellers have done in the last six months is truly unbelievable. When these two ladies started their Burn Boot Camp One-Year Extreme Makeover Challenge six short months ago they weighed a combine 604 LBS. As of today, they weigh a combined 447 LBS. I told Brandi and Michelle I know they can drop roughly 200 LBS by April and I have their back all the way…they told me I was crazy. Well today I would like to announce that maybe I am a little bit crazy!

Together the duo has done a fantastic job staying committed to 7 workouts per week , a strict nutrition regiment, and strict accountability rules. Thus far both ladies have exceed their own expectations and are extremely proud of themselves. Myself, as their transformation coach, am proud as well but I know we are only half way and I am never completely satisfied. I recently had a talk with both Michelle and Brandi and explained to them that Phase 2 of their journey will undoubtedly bring harder challenges. I was happily surprised with what they both had to say.

My Thoughts Thus Far…

On Michelle

Michelle has found some motivation in her husband J. For the first 4 months of Michelle’s transformation J was by her side every extra workout. I would be pushing their adorable little children in then “dream flyer” red wagon as we ran around Huntersville. J and Michelle were very consistent and each had dropped over 30 LBS . Unfortunately  J suffered an injury to his Achilles tendon and was sidelined for about 45 days. J’s injury combined with death in the family caused Michelle’s full steam ahead momentum to slow. Now that J is healed they are re motivated together and Michelle even asked me if she could do hill sprints after a boot camp work out!  The old Michelle would never WANT to do hill sprints after a workout and that really shows me her mentality moving forward.  Michelle’s mindset has been put to the test 100 times over and she continues get mentally stronger with every challenge. Successful people understand that failure is necessary to recognize victory and no matter how many times you fall you’ll never lay down. I can guarantee you that Michelle will be a complete success in the end!

On Brandi

Brandi has simply had an unreal journey. If you thought finding someone who is mentally and physically capable of dropping 113 LBS in six months is tough, you are right. Brandi is doing an extremely rare thing and making it look easy. But she would stop me right there, and say “Whoa, easy is the wrong word to use!” Let me put this into perspective for you to let you know how extremely mentally tough Brandi Parker is. Out of 168 possible workout sessions Brandi has made it to all 168. Out of 30 weeks of extremely detailed meal logging, Brandi has turned in all 30. Out of 12 weigh-ins Brandi has been to every one not to mention she won $1,000 at a regional Shaklee Weight Loss Contest. Through Thanksgiving, Christmas,  and New Years and all the temptations that come with in Brandi has been virtually flawless. As her trainer, I am NEVER satisfied and there is no such thing as complacency in my world. I have a feeling Brandi feels the same way as she recently accepted a challenge to switch to a full on Paleo Plus Diet and take her nutrition to the next level!

Taking it to the Next Level

I have extremely high expectations as we take our journey into the summer. Brandi and Michelle are more motivated than ever and extremely excited for what is to come. I will be keeping you updated once per month with a blog post on the ladies so make sure you stay tuned and continue to show their support!

If you think this is what someone close to you needs to get motivated, please send them this link to read!

Extreme Makeover Burn Boot Camp Edition – Update at 5 Months https://burnbootcamp.com/extreme-makeover-bbc-edition-update-at-5-months/ Wed, 30 Jan 2013 23:39:08 +0000 https://devanklinefitness.com/?p=1138 The last five months have been nothing less than stellar for Burn Bootcamp Extreme Makeover’s Brand Parker and Michelle Sellers. If you have been following the Fit Moms Forever blog then you know about these two amazing ladies. You haven’t been updated on their progress since December, right before the Holidays hit! So before I fill you in…let me briefly catch those of you who are new to the F.M.F. blog up!

In August of 2012 I approached Brandi and Michelle with a chance for them to change their lives forever. Since then there has been a series of stories on their progress. From Michelle’s amazing resilience to Brandi winning $1,000 and qualifying for a National Weight Loss Contest, you can catch yourself through the links below! If you up-to-date do not bother with the links!

2nd Entry – Bump, Bruises, and Burn Bootcamp

3rd Entry- Has Anyone Ever Lost Weight This Fast?

4th Entry -Exclusive Video Interview with Both Ladies

5th Entry – Brandi and Michelle Holding Out the Holidays

It Has Officially Been 5 Months – This is How They are Feeling

Today, I can tell you that both ladies feel amazing. I had a chance to grab them after bootcamp and ask them a couple of questions!

Devan (me): “What was it like staying clean through the Holiday’s?”

Michelle:  “I would be lying if I said it was easy, but it was easier than in the past.  Granted, I was really sick and had no appetite for a lot of it, but once I started feeling better I still didn’t have the cravings I thought I would.  I did avoid a lot of the temptation by not going to all of the cookie exchanges I was invited to.  I did break down and make Christmas cookies with the kids and decided to have 2 afterwards… you know, to check the quality :)… but it left me feeling icky and sick to my stomach.  So i didn’t have the urge after that.”
Brandi: “Eating healthy and clean during the holidays was not actually as hard as I anticipated.  Having the Shaklee shakes and meal bars helped tremendously.  The biggest surprise to me was that I didn’t want any dessert.  I made desserts for both holidays (some of my old favorites!!) and had absolutely no desire to eat any of them.  I used Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Eve as my cheat days (my first cheat days since starting this journey), and I ate what I wanted.  But, I found I didn’t over-eat like I used to do.  And, I made myself get on the treadmill and run the day after I cheated.”
Devan (me): “How much weight have you lost this far and how do you feel about it?”
Michelle: “By my scale… 41 pounds.  I know it is a big number, but I have so much more to go and I want to see greater progress! I have hit somewhat of a plateau and am hoping I can keep my spirits up and get past it so that I can start seeing those numbers go down fast likethe beginning!  However, my body fat percentage is still dropping at a nicer rate.  I am down 10% since we started so I am proud of that!
Brandi: “As of this morning (1/29/2013), I have lost a total of 97.1 lbs, and I feel FABULOUS!!  I honestly cannot believe the weight has come off this quickly.  I catch myself taking double-takes in the mirror when I pass. I get on the scales two or three times because I can’t believe it says what it says.  I never feel deprived; I just don’t want to eat the junk I used to eat.  I now give a lot more thought to what I am eating and how it will affect me.”
Thank you ladies for sharing with the Fit Moms Forever community! We will be looking forward to Michelle’s 50 LB mark and Brandi’s 100 LB milestone! It is always hard to be fully satisfied of yourself when you have to look at yourself in the mirror every single day. Brandi and Michelle are definitely champions and winners are NEVER satisfied!

From My Point of View…

There is only one word that comes to mind; Incredible. The dedication, commitment, hard work, flawless attitude, and amazing progress is nothing short of amazing! I am so darn proud to be able to work with these two ladies on such a personal level. They teach me something every single day. When I do not feel like going to the gym on a particular day I think of the dedication of Brandi, Michelle, and all of our Burn Boot Camp and MamaBurst family. I am going to continue to push them and we will continue to crush any limiting self-beliefs they have in the process!

They have both sets goals for the half way point coming up in March. I would like to see Michelle hit 50 lbs and Brandi hit 112 lbs! With our encouragement, support and motivation they will undoubtedly succeed!

I know they are in it to win it…and I will be at the finish line as their biggest fan cheering them on!

Big September for Brandi and Michelle https://burnbootcamp.com/big-september-for-brandi-and-michelle/ Wed, 03 Oct 2012 06:43:45 +0000 https://devanklinefitness.com/?p=1004 I am very excited to be updating you today!

I am SO darn proud of Michelle and Brandi!

As you probably already know, Brandi Parker, Michelle Sellers, and I made a committment to take on their obesity head on in our own rendition of the hit T.V. show, Extreme Makeover – Weight Loss Edition. They have agreed to allow us to follow them on their journey through my Fit Moms Forever™ Blog.

Read how I approached Brandi and Michelle One Month Ago and asked them to commit themselves to possibly one of the most challenging feats a human can face. They both committed without hesitation and are not looking back, not for one second.

Four grueling weeks of 7 Burn Boot Camp Workouts left Brandi with a mild right knee issue and Michelle with painful shinsplints that would hold most people back from pushing themselves to the limit. Not in our house. They both have been able to work through painful boot camps with the support of Michelle’s husband ,J, and her toddler, Lilly, mimicking me by telling Michelle and Brandi to “Push it, push it!” Long story short, injuries did not hinder them one bit.

There were bumps and bruises that took a toll on the bodies of both Brandi and Michelle. But their attitude and dedication has been relentless. Brandi and Michelle have parlayed my Burn Boot Camp for Moms program, a turn-key weight loss meal replacement plan from Shaklee Nutrition’s – Cinch Inch Loss Program, and an undeniable desire to change their lives forever all into the AMAZING results they saw in September.

As part of our commitment contract the gals are required to turn in nutrition logs detailing their Shaklee Program. Once again, not one slip. Of course there is always room for improvement but they both have mastered the most challenging part of this whole journey. It generally takes 21 re-occurrences to form any habit and they have been virtually flawless for 31 days in a row. It is safe to say that both gals are on the fast track to cutting their weight in half!

With that being said….drum roll please…here are Brandi and Michelle’s results from September!

Do-It-Yourself Kitchen Raid https://burnbootcamp.com/do-it-yourself-kitchen-raid/ Mon, 24 Sep 2012 15:37:46 +0000 https://devanklinefitness.com/?p=999
If you didn’t already know from my previous blog posts there is one quote that I like when it comes to fitness and nutrition, “You cannot out train your diet.” This means that no matter how hard you work in the gym you will NEVER reach your goals if proper nutrition isn’t more important that your workouts. Some other things you may have heard me say are, “Abs are made in the kitchen” or “This months diet is next months body.” Everyone wants faster weight loss, how do you ensure that your nutrition is aligned with your workouts?

The Fit Moms Forever “Do-it-yourself” kitchen raid!

If your kitchen is packed with good food that fuels what you do in the gym you are much more likely to stay on track. Even when those late night cravings rumble your stomach, you will ONLY have holistic choice to curb the growling lion in your stomach. You probably have heard this concept before, but this blog post is mean to teach you how to do so!

What what kind of food should you be eating to properly align your nutrition with your workouts and ensure you only have the best choices in your home? Here is my self-guided kitch raid to help you sort out the good from the no-so-good.

We are going to be throwing away some not-so-good food today. Print this list out and head to the kitchen. I challenge you to bag up your unhealthy food and donate it to a local soup kitchen rather than just throwing it away. Some that do not have the luxury of the finer things in life will be fortunate enough to have your Chips-a-hoy cookies. So give back!

Your Refrigerator

The fridge is the heart of the kitchen. You will find some foods that scream “DONATE ME” on the box so get your garbage bags ready!
Your Refrigerator

  • Donate this: Beverages with high fructose corn syrup or sugar. Drinking calories is one of the quickest ways to gain weight, so quickly rid your fridge of any beverage that lists HFCS or sugar on the ingredient list.Replace with: Water. It is a well-known fact that most people are partially dehydrated, a condition that is harmful to your health and wreaks havoc on your weight loss efforts. Keep plenty of cold water on hand for proper hydration.
  • Donate this: Fatty meats. It is important that you be selective about the meats that you eat. I may tell you that chicken is a great source of protein, but if you take that as a license to eat fried chicken everyday then the benefit of the protein will be lost in all the extra fat calories.Replace with: Lean meats. Skinless chicken breast, lean ground turkey, white fish – there are numerous choices when it comes to lean meats.
  • Donate this: Fruit-flavored yogurt. I hate to break this to you, but that cute individually packaged yogurt is going to do more harm to your waistline than you think. More than 50% of the calories in fruit-flavored yogurt come from sugar. Check out the ingredient list and you likely find both high fructose corn syrup AND sugar.Replace with: Plain low-fat yogurt, Greek yogurt, or  cottage cheese. If you love yogurt, then get the plain version. You can even chop up some fresh fruit and stir it in. Another option is to have a scoop of cottage cheese with chopped fruit on top.

Your Pantry

This may be the most painful part of your kitchen raid, since most junk food ends up here. So take a moment to give yourself a pep talk before grabbing that garbage bag and opening your pantry.

  • Donate this: Sugar-filled cereal. If sugar or high fructose corn syrup are listed as ingredients on your cereal box, it’s got to go. Sugar-filled cereal is basically another form of junk food, and will only add inches to your waist.Replace with: Whole Grain Oatmeal. There is a huge difference between instant, sugar-filled oatmeal and whole grain oatmeal.
  • Donate this: Chips/Crackers. While refined chips and crackers are fun to munch on, the extra calories will quickly add up. Do yourself a favor by not allowing these into your pantry.Replace with: Almonds. The key to making this snack a winner is to practice portion control. Place a handful of almonds into individual bags for pre-portioned snacks.
  • Donate this: Packaged Sweets. I don’t really have to explain this one, do I? Cookies and cakes and candies shouldn’t be a regular part of your diet, so keep them out of your house. It’s one thing to enjoy a dessert once in a while, it is quite another to routinely eat processed sweets at home.Replace with: Dried Fruit. When you want to munch on something sweet, turn to a bag of dried fruit. Make sure that you purchase dried fruit that does not contained added sugars.

Frozen Fit Snacks

Freezers are where many a fitness goal has gone to crash and burn into a container of ice cream.

Dump those high-fat, high-sugar ice creams and instead stock your freezer with:

  • Frozen grapes
  • Fruit-only popsicles
  • Frozen bananas for smoothies and blended protein shakes

Now march that box of off-limit foods to your nearest food bank and don’t look back. It’s a great idea to raid your kitchen every couple of months as a way of keeping yourself on track. I will be doing a video blog post of what my kitchen looks like so you can all of the things I talked about today!

In the meantime, open up dialogue with your family members about the healthy changes that you’re making, and get everyone in on it. The best way to hold yourself accountable is to be an advocate of fitness and health. Tell everyone what you are doing!

The quickest and most permanent weight loss comes as a result of healthy eating and consistent, challenging workouts.

Remember…YOU CAN”T OUT TRAIN YOUR DIET

Extreme Makeover – Bumps, Bruises, and Burn Boot Camp https://burnbootcamp.com/extreme-makeover-bumps-bruises-and-boot-camp/ Mon, 10 Sep 2012 21:32:35 +0000 https://devanklinefitness.com/?p=986 After two weeks, 14 workouts, a whole lot of sweat, and a little bit of tears Michelle and Brandi are on the fast track to success. I have been utterly BLOWN AWAY by the commitment of these two gals. We literally are pushing strollers and dragging wagons full of their children around the town of Huntersville making sure that not one second of our time is wasted. It has been a very intense two weeks of boot camp and also extremely productive.

From 5:30 am workouts to doing 100 yard sprints in the pouring rain, Brandi and Michelle are absolutely pushing themselves to their limits and beyond. Last week as I finished up with my 5:45 pm Burn Boot Camp I see Brandi and Michelle drive into the parking lot at the same time black clouds begin to roll in. Pouring rain is an understatement. It was like a monsoon of hail size rain drops that literally soaked through our shoes into our socks. As Michelle and Brandi finished up with their 100 yard sprints I could hear the water being squished between their toes from 45 minutes of pure saturation. Talk about dedication? I knew they have what it takes, last week they both began to realize that themselves. This picture is right after our “Rain Run”….look how SOAKED we are! 🙂

I explained to them that at the beginning that there will be some bumps and bruises that we face along the way. I addressed it on day one and they acknowledged it. Into week two Michelle’s calf muscles have been extremely sore and Brandi has been faced with a nagging knee injury. An injury may slow down the pace they can move their body, but will certainly not slow down the mindset of these two. I just tell them to “Keep Moving” and keep moving they do. Both knew that things were going to be difficult as they are challenging their body to do something it has never done before, but just how difficult it would be to overcome an injury is a question still in their minds.

Being a professional athlete I know the difference between being hurt and being injured. This week will be a test on the girls. This is one of many unprecedented challenges that they will face throughout this journey. Being overweight and pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone is a challenging enough. Doing it with only one good leg will be a challenge that will solidify the rest of their transformation.

We have a weight in at the end of this week and I am VERY excited to see how much weight both Michelle and Brandi have lost. I know that both ladies are changing and I hear them being complemented every single day from their support system at boot camp and at home. I cannot tell you how proud I am of these two for doing what they are doing. Standing in the pouring rain, staring down the impossible and saying “bring it on”! Stay tuned for a weigh in announcement at the end of the week!

When you tell people what you are going to do then you set yourself up for positive results. As humans we naturally do not want to let people down.

19. Say no to lunch at work

Half the obesity problem lies with social eating. Tell your co-workers you are making an effort to get healthy and they will respect that even if they poke fun. Eventually they will follow your lead.

20. Family game of “tag”

Go outside and chase them around! Kids love nothing more than to play “tag” with their mom and dad. A 15 minute game of tag can burn some serious calories and it keep your whole family moving.

21. Drink Water in the AM

The first thing you do before you even open your eyes in the morning is stand in front of the fridge and get at least 24 ounces of water down. This will help tremendously boost your fat burning potential.

22. Supplement with Whole Food Vitamins

98% of us, moms or not, do not get all the vitamins and minerals we need from food. Seek out a clean source for a multivitamin. Shaklee Vitalizer is the best product on the market today.

23. Jump Rope

If you cannot seem to find anything to do, there is no help around, and you are ready to get a great workout but do not know what to do.  Jump rope as fast as you can for 20 minutes! You will probably be pretty awful your first couple times, but that’s okay! Practice makes perfect and it is a great way to burn body fat in a short amount of time!

24. Set goals for yourself

Whether you want to lose weight, tone up, or both be sure to set realistic goals that you know you can achieve. Consistency and dedication are the two key elements to health and fitness and setting proper goals will help attract both things into your life.

25. BE POSITIVE

You CAN do it and it WILL happen! Take it day by day and meal by meal. If you happen to mess up, OH WELL! Shake it off and get back at it the next meal or next day! You do not have to wait until Monday to start again! GO GET WHAT YOU DESERVE!!

Share this with anyone you might think it will benefit! Spread the love of health to all those you know will appreciate it!
